Portrait Gallery
The wealth of the Smith family made possible the creation of a substantial
visual record. Numerous portraits, both painted and photographic, were
commissioned. This portrait gallery captures images of those persons closest to
Gerrit Smith, whose images have been preserved by, or made accessible to the
institutions cooperating in the development of this site. Gerrit Smith's
granddaughter-in-law, Susan Dixwell Miller, made an extensive photographic
record of the family in later years, which can be found at the Madison County
Historical Society along with many of the images presented below.
To facilitate selection, portions of the complete images have been reduced
to icons. Complete images contain more detail. All of the images here have
been modified, both during the process of capture and in their preparation for
display elsewhere on this site. Most have been cropped, with color balance and
contrast altered to conform to the design of the website. Original photographic
images are monochrome, generally made from daguerreotype, tintype or glass
plate. Coloration of paintings has been preserved to the extent possible.
