The New York Line
The History of the New York Line can be divided into several distinct phases: the three "establishments", or authorized raisings of regiments, and the "derangment" of 1781, in which five understrength regiments were condensed and reorganized as the 1st and 2nd New York.
The First Establishment
"The colony of New York was ordered to raise four regiments, each regiment to consist of ten companies. The companies were directed to contain each seventy-two, rank and file, four sergeants, a drum and fife, and to be placed under the command of a captain and two lieutenants. Each regiment was to be commanded by a colonel,a lieutenant-colonel, and a major. Of these three regiments, the city of New York was to furnish one." --"A Narrative of the Military Actions of Colonel Marinus Willett"-- chapter 4, page 33
These regiments were authorized as of June 28,1775, and are disbanded at year's end. A regiment of artillery was also to be raised.
